Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Harassment After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the flight, including increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The fully automated spacecraft departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of space.

The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
